Description

Capital College of the Arts, Management and Technology, in collaboration with the UK’s University of Sunderland, offers a Master of Arts in Visual Practice program. This program is designed to foster originality, creativity, and imaginative thinking in professional practice. It encourages multi-disciplinary approaches across Fine Art and Photography allowing students to develop a unique perspective based on their individual interests.

The MA in Visual Practice aims to deepen students’ knowledge of key concepts, debates, and contexts for contemporary visual practice. It focuses on helping students identify their working philosophy, developmental projects, and career plans. The program emphasizes the importance of understanding the values that drive creative practitioners and developing an enterprising approach to achieve their aims.

Key features of the program include:

  • Encouragement to explore specific contexts and modes of working for effective audience/client engagement.
  • Consideration of contemporary arts funding bodies and professional organizations’ requirements, particularly around access, diversity, inclusivity, and sustainability.

Program Structure 

The MA in Visual Practice is a practice-based program that requires a higher level of independent working compared to undergraduate degrees. It covers:

  • Development and sustainability of individual creative practice.
  • Dissemination of work and audience development.
  • Ethical practice and fostering successful partnerships and collaborations.
  • A stimulating and supportive learning environment for testing and debating emerging ideas.
  • Advanced program of critical studies exploring major issues in contemporary creative practice.
  • Tailored subject-specific guidance for future career or research pathways.
  • ‘Creative Lives’ program featuring guest speakers from diverse professional backgrounds.
  • Opportunities to participate in masterclasses and live projects with Sunderland Culture.

The program structure includes three 60-credit modules:

  1. VISM01 (Experiment and Reflect): Establishing methodologies for professional practice development.
  2. VISM02 (Developing your Creative and Professional Career): Developing and evaluating practical work with reference to professional aims.
  3. VISM03 (Resolve and Exhibit): Presenting and disseminating final visual projects in a public context.

Facilities and Learning Environment 

You will be based in the School of Design within the Faculty of Contemporary Art and Design located in CCAMT’s 9 Ah Hood Road. Facilities include a dedicated MA Art Studio, printmaking studio, photography studio, workshops, high-end computer suites, and various digital printers.  The Faculty is known for its high-quality studios, workshops, production facilities, and practice-led research. Students will benefit from:

  • Fully equipped photographic studios, darkrooms, and digital production facilities.
  • Opportunities to work alongside lecturers on professional and research projects.
  • Participation in exhibitions and live projects, including opportunities for curatorial research and exhibition.

Minimum Entry Requirements

  • Minimum age: 21 years old
  • Bachelor Degree with 60%, or equivalent;  AND
  • The student will need to submit a statement of purpose, creative portfolio as well as pass an aptitude test and an interview.
  • Other qualifications which will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Statement of Purpose (500–800 words)

The student will need to describe their interest, involvement and experience in design and/or the visual arts. Design experience can include work done with arts organizations, galleries or events such as film, performance, festivals, exhibitions. These can also be events you attended or projects that you worked on. 

Creative Portfolio

The student will need to submit a portfolio – a collection of work that showcases their skills, personality and creative potential. This should include what they have learnt and created so far to what they plan to do next. The portfolio should demonstrate: – familiarity with designing for two or more digital platforms or genres such as website, mobile application, other devices and interactive displays, online exhibition, online marketplace, etc. – ability to map out information design and user journey – basic skills in layout design and typography These can be submitted in the form of sketches, drawings, photographs, moodboards and collages.

Aptitude Test

The student will need to complete and pass a short skill test consisting of a creative task and multiple choice questions. 

Interview

The student will need to participate in a dialogue in relation to the submitted statement of purpose and creative portfolio – What are your motivations for choosing this program? Share your interest, influence and aspiration. What do you hope to achieve in this programme? You should also share how this programme might prepare you for your future career path. If the student is unable to attend the interview on campus, an online interview will be arranged.
