Reporting to: Program Coordinator School of Music, or Chief Academic Officer
Reason for Reporting Structure: Direct reporting to the Program Coordinator and/or Chief Academic Officer ensures proper academic oversight of ensemble instruction, maintains quality standards required by our University of Sunderland partnership, and provides strategic alignment with the college’s music performance program objectives and cross-cultural artistic vision.
Salary Range: The teaching fee will be determined based on the candidate’s level of academic qualification and teaching experience.

- Traditional Chinese Instruments (Erhu, Guzheng, Pipa, etc.)

Traditional and Cross-Cultural Ensembles:
- Chinese Ensemble and Mixed Traditional Ensembles

- Cross-Cultural Fusion Ensembles (e.g., Western strings with Chinese instruments, vocal with diverse instrumental accompaniment)

This module develops comprehensive ensemble skills from foundational collaborative abilities to advanced musical leadership, preparing graduates for diverse performance contexts in Singapore’s multicultural music landscape.
Key Responsibilities:
- Ensemble Direction and Leadership:
- Direct and coach diverse chamber music ensembles across both Classical/Traditional and Contemporary performance tracks
- Create innovative cross-cultural ensemble combinations utilizing the college’s diverse instrumental offerings
- Prepare ensembles for concerts, recitals, and public performances
- Cross-Cultural Arrangement and Adaptation:
- Develop basic arrangements that combine instruments from different cultural traditions (e.g., Western classical instruments with Chinese traditional instruments)
- Adapt existing repertoire for available instrumentation and student skill levels
- Create accessible arrangements that showcase each instrument’s unique characteristics
- Collaborative Skill Development:
- Foster advanced ensemble skills including listening, blending, timing, and musical communication
- Develop students’ ability to lead sectional rehearsals and mentor junior ensemble members
- Guide students through sophisticated assessment formats including ensemble performances and collaborative projects
- Repertoire Development and Programming:
- Select and arrange repertoire appropriate for mixed instrumental combinations and diverse cultural backgrounds
- Balance traditional and contemporary works to reflect Singapore’s multicultural music scene
- Program concerts that showcase student growth and ensemble development
- Individual and Sectional Coaching:
- Provide targeted coaching for individual parts within ensemble contexts
- Lead sectional rehearsals to address technical and musical challenges
- Support students in developing independent practice strategies for ensemble preparation
- Performance Preparation and Presentation:
- Prepare students for assessed performances demonstrating ensemble cohesion and artistic development
- Coach stage presence, performance etiquette, and professional presentation skills
- Integrate real-world performance practices and industry standards into ensemble training
- Collaborative Program Enhancement:
- Work closely with Principal Study teachers and other faculty to align ensemble work with individual instrumental development
- Contribute to curriculum development and program improvement within chamber music education
- Engage with Singapore’s music community to provide students with professional networking opportunities
- Cross-Track Integration:
- Create opportunities for collaboration between Classical/Traditional and Contemporary performance track students
- Develop innovative projects that bridge different musical styles and cultural traditions
- Foster inclusive ensemble environments that celebrate diverse musical backgrounds
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Music Performance, Music Education, Composition, or related field; Master’s preferred
- Minimum 3-5 years of professional ensemble performance and/or conducting experience, with demonstrated expertise in chamber music or small ensemble direction
- Minimum 2-3 years of teaching experience in higher education ensemble instruction, with evidence of successful student ensemble performances
- Basic music arrangement and/or composition skills, with demonstrated ability to adapt music for diverse instrumental combinations
- Experience working with multicultural ensembles or cross-cultural musical collaborations, particularly involving both Western and Asian musical traditions
- Proven ability to work with mixed instrumentation including both traditional Chinese instruments and Western classical/contemporary instruments
- Excellent collaborative and communication skills with demonstrated ability to work with diverse student populations and cultural backgrounds
- Experience in concert preparation, performance coordination, and public presentation of student ensembles
Desired Competencies:
- Broad instrumental knowledge across multiple musical traditions, with particular strength in either Western classical, Chinese traditional, or contemporary popular music styles
- Demonstrated ability to create engaging and culturally sensitive ensemble arrangements that respect the characteristics of different musical traditions
- Strong collaborative leadership skills, showing flexibility in working with program coordinators, Principal Study teachers, and diverse student groups
- Experience with innovative ensemble programming that combines different musical genres, styles, or cultural traditions
- Understanding of contemporary chamber music practices, community engagement through music, and the role of ensemble performance in professional music careers
- Proficiency in music notation software and basic recording technology for ensemble documentation and arrangement preparation
- Knowledge of Singapore’s multicultural music scene and experience working within diverse cultural contexts
- Commitment to fostering inclusive musical environments that celebrate both individual cultural identities and collaborative artistic expression
